Count Birds. Contribute to Science. Connect with Nature. |
Every winter, bird lovers across the Americas come together for the Christmas Bird Count (CBC), one of the longest-running community science projects in the world.
Northern Arizona Audubon Society coordinates four Christmas Bird Counts across our region, bringing together experienced birders and enthusiastic beginners to help track bird populations and contribute to important conservation research.
What is the Christmas Bird Count?
|
Started in 1900 by ornithologist Frank Chapman, the Christmas Bird Count is an annual tradition organized by the National Audubon Society. Each year, volunteers count birds within designated 15-mile-diameter circles on a single day between December 14 and January 5. The information collected helps scientists understand long-term changes in bird populations and informs conservation efforts. It's a wonderful opportunity to explore local habitats, connect with fellow bird enthusiasts, and make a meaningful contribution to bird conservation.
