The Grand Canyon HawkWatch monitors long-term trends in raptors using the southern portion of the Intermountain Flyway. The flight through this region is one of the largest concentrations of migrating raptors known in the western U.S. and Canada. We will be joining the official counters at their perch on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Be sure to register as our space is limited.

Time: 6:00AM - 3:30 PM (including travel time)
Location: Yaki Point, Grand Canyon National Park
Meeting Point: Sedona Whole Foods parking lot at 6:00 AM or Yaki Point at 9 AM
Directions: If you are carpooling, meet us in the parking lot at the Sedona Whole Foods on 89A. If you are driving yourself, park at the South Entrance Visitor Center and take the shuttle to Yaki Point. For most of the year, the road to Yaki Point is closed to private cars. At Yaki Point, look for the signage to the Hawkwatch perch. Please let me know if you plan to carpool or drive yourself.
What to Bring: Water, snacks/lunch, binoculars, sturdy shoes, hat, weather-appropriate clothing, your own chair, and if you are driving, your National Park Pass.

About the Location: We will be standing on the rim of the Grand Canyon, looking for migrants coming up out of the canyon. Expect to see sharp-shinned hawks, Cooper's hawks, broad-winged hawks, red-tailed hawks, Swainson's hawk, American kestrels, and turkey vultures, but you never know what will show up.
